Maria Goretti – saree from Payal Singhal

‘I am normally a jeans T-shirt kind of person. That’s what I normally wear and when I am dressed up it’s a kurta, so this for me was absolutely beautiful. I think bungy jumping didn’t scare me as much as this did, but it was a great experience,’ Maria told IANS.

‘I have never walked the ramp before, this is for the first time. It was very exciting. Earlier, I have seen Payal doing really funky stuff for me during my MTV days so this was a huge change,’ she added.

The collection, called Decadence, was primarily Indian. It was a tribute to Singhal’s 10 years in the fashion industry and hence was an ensemble of the best selling and award winning pieces she has created in last one decade.

I think she used her blouse piece for the saree to make a saree for her Teddy – how sweet!

She looks lovely, although I do think that Teddy doesn’t seem to happy to be wearing the saree!

May be if she made it in to a matching turban!

Pam Anderson – Big boss saree

Should I make some witty and lewd comment about Pam’s life and say that her cup runneth over..?

The picture is very uplifting. Here is some Titbit about her, she might be pretty but she mostly got Ds!

I think we should nip these pendulous puns in the bud? I really think you’re milking it..

Groan…

Anderson, 43, is believed to have been paid more than $550,000 for her three-day cameo in the Bigg Boss house, but is said to have stipulated no bikini shots. She instead hopes to portray an “ethnic” image.

How many of you have heard of the legend of the Indian Princess from Ayodhya marrying one of the kings in Korea in the first century?

Apparently, a significant portion of the Korean population is from that lineage.

Heo Hwang-ok was a princess who travelled from the ancient kingdom of Ayodhya (in modern day India) to Korea. Information about her comes almost entirely from a few short passages in the Samguk Yusa, an 11th-century Korean chronicle. According to that chronicle, she arrived on a boat and married King Suro of Gaya in the year 48 CE. She was the first queen of Geumgwan Gaya, and is considered an ancestor by several Korean lineages.

Legend

According to the Samguk Yusa, Heo’s parents had a dream of King Suro. The dream showed that the king had not yet found a queen. Her father then told her to go to him. She arrived on a boat with gold, silver, and a tea plant. Before marrying the king, she took off her silk trousers and prayed to the mountain spirit.

Remains

A tomb believed to be Heo’s lies near that believed to be her husband’s, in Gimhae, South Korea. A pagoda traditionally held to have been brought to Korea on her ship is located near her grave. The Samguk Yusa reports that the pagoda was erected on her ship in order to calm the god of the ocean and allow the ship to pass. The unusual and rough form of this pagoda, unlike any other in Korea, may lend some credence to the account.
The Samguk Yusa also records that a temple was built in honor of Heo and her husband by King Jilji in 452. The temple was called Wanghusa, or “the Queen’s temple.” Since there is no other record of Buddhism having been adopted in 5th-century Gaya, modern scholars have interpreted this as an ancestral shrine rather than a Buddhist temple.

Descendants

Members of both the Heo lineages (including the clans of Gimhae, Gongam, Yangcheon, Taein, and Hayang) and the Gimhae Kim lineage consider themselves descendants of Heo Hwang-ok and King Suro. Two of the couple’s ten sons chose the mother’s name. The Heo clans trace their origins to them, and regard Heo as the founder of their lines. The Gimhae Kims trace their origin to the other eight sons.
In 2004, two Korean researchers analyzed samples of DNA taken on the site of the two royal tombs, which enabled them to establish the existence of a genetic bond between the Korean ethnic group and certain ethnic groups of India, Malaysia and Thailand. Research continues.
Archeologists discovered a stone with two fish kissing each other, a symbol of the Gaya kingdom that is unique to the Mishra royal family in Ayodhya, India.

Interesting and fascinating story for sure.

But I digress, the part that I found most intriguing here was the use of oriental tops design as the saree blouses.

Not sure about the top picture, but the second picture has an interesting combination that works rather well.

I think I saw it recently somewhere as well. I do have a recollection of seeing pure oriental design elements in a saree not too long ago.

Love this Pokemon saree = we need a little whimsy in sarees

pokemon saree

This is what we need in sarees – a little whimsy and a little more pop culture.

So how many of you have played Pokemon video game or the card game. If you need help in constructing your Pokemon deck, let me know. I helped a young girl get up to the state level competition in Pokemon – yup, I am such a nerd.

I also like this picture because of the “blouse” which is just a regular black top, and it doesn’t look bad.

She looks very regal and exotic and proud and happy!

Some reader commented that i should post some pictures of an african model in saree. So here is Naomi Campbell in flaming red saree. She has done a good job here in getting the drape right.

Here she is on the ramp. This looks much better than the red one. I would like to see her in a light colour such as white

I don’t listen to their music and don’t know much about them. But my 5-year old daughter knows more about them and likes to see them in action.

Couple of them in this picture haven’t got the drape right but that’s understandable. Don’t they all look so nice? I would like to see perform in sarees.

Lady Gaga in a saree….looks almost like a painting

Somewhat of a ghostly look, but in a good way. White saree goes very well with her blonde hair. This could potrait of the lady whose ghost is haunting the protagonist in a horror movie, maybe to tell him that she was murdered by her husband.

Sorry I couldn’t find a bigger picture of her in this saree. Please post the link if you do.

“Leaving the home of Abishek and Ashwirya… Having just seen their gorgeous baby” as Operah says

While on a trip to Mumbai on Monday, Oprah Winfrey got all decked out in a chic sari, the silk garment popular with women in India.

In related news, worldwide sales of saris are now expected to go through the roof.Image

Talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey is on her maiden visit to India. And guess who is taking her around – Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and hubby Abhishek Bachchan.

Oprah Winfrey chose to go truly Indian as she draped an orange and golden sari as she went to meet Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai and her 2-month-old baby on Monday night in Mumbai.

She was greeted by top-notch Indian socialites and Bollywood glitterati including megastar Amitabh Bachchan, superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and her ever favourite Aishwarya Rai at a private party thrown by page 3 socialite Parmeshwar Godrej.

But before all of that Oprah made it a point to stop and visit the main star- Aishwarya’s baby.

Oprah went to visit the Bachchan residence Jalsa to meet Abhishek and Aishwarya’s two month-old daughter, nicknamed ‘Beti B’. The meeting was at the top of her priority list upon her arrival in Mumbai. She was at their residence for more than an hour.

Amitabh Bachchan then took over the role of a chauffeur and along with Abhishek, Aishwarya and wife Jaya drove Oprah to a party.

Overwhelmend by Oprah’s gesture Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: “The gracious Oprah Winfrey visits our home, to meet us and bless the baby..warm hearted, endearing .. drive her to party in her honor”

He also seemed thrilled to see the lady in saree “And Oprah in sari .. looking lovely !!”

The family accompanied Oprah to a private party hosted at the socialite’s residence in Mumbai according to Daily Bhaskar.

The party saw an impressive footfall from Bollywood, filmmakers Ashutosh Gowariker and Rajkumar Hirani, as well as actors Anupam Kher, his son Sikander Kher, Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty with hubby Raj Kundra, Abhay Deol with actress-girlfriend Preeti Desai, Lara Dutta, Dino Morea, Sameera Reddy, Kalki Koechlin, Kangna Ranaut, Anil Kapoor and Imran Khan were in attendance for the high profile party.

Celebrities took to Twitter to share their excitement upon meeting the 57-year-old iconic lady.

Sameera Reddy tweeted: “My god! Oprah Winfrey is the warmest most down to earth person I haveever met! What a personality! I’m thrilled.”

Heavily pregnant actress Lara Dutta was equally upbeat about being in the company of Winfrey, as well as her “Don 2: The King Is Back” co-star Shah Rukh.

“@Oprah and @iamsrk, two people I absolutely adore! Thank you for making my day! Now can go into labour happily!” posted Lara.

According to news agency PTI, Oprah is amazed by the tolerance and system of joint families in India.

She likes the way families learn to love and live together.

On Tuesday she visited a city slum at Colaba in Mumbai and is also had dinner with a family of four generations.

Oprah is in India primarily to shoot for her new show ‘Next Chapter’.

Oprah’s ‘Next Chapter’ is the next edition of her famous talk show in which she will travel around the world interviewing celebrities, newsmakers and others.

Anja Ploetz, Photographers’ Agent

Anja Ploetz

This is Anja Ploetz, a Paris based photographers’ agent in the fashion industry. In a recent interview in the New York Times (which you can read here), she talks about her love of sarees and how, for the past two years, she has only worn Indian dress.

To me this seems like nothing more than a fairly light interview accompanied by a rather nice picture but take a look at the comments of the NYT readers! Do we find this article as controversial as they do?

The Crow Road Saree Mystery

0
0

This isn’t a genuine wedding photo, it’s part of a publicity still for the BBC’s 1996 adaptation of Iain Banks’ novel The Crow Road. The wedding is a pivotal moment in the story but, curiously, the fact that the bride is wearing a saree goes entirely unexplained. This saree is completely detached from Indian culture. Neither the bride, groom or, indeed, any of the wedding guests have any Indian connections and the wedding takes place in the Western Isles of Scotland. So why does Verity Walker (played by Danish actress Simone Bendix) wear this rather lovely white and gold saree for her wedding rather than the more traditional western wedding dress? My guess is that it’s designed to show Verity as a worldly and cosmopolitan woman but, as a saree fan, my guess could be a little bit biased. Although, if the saree is written in the book, then the explanation may be more complex.

Here’s the whole picture, by the way.

If any of you have read the book, I would be very interested to know if the saree is mentioned there.

Halle Berry in Cloud Atlas

picture from hindustantimes.com

Hollywood actress and former model, Halle Berry in a rich, dark red saree that, I think, really suits her colouring. It’s a shame we can’t get a clearer view but this is from the briefest of clips (less than a second) in a trailer for the film ‘Cloud Atlas’. The film, due to be released in October, is based on the novel of the same name by David Mitchell. It’s a complex tale consisting of six interlocking love stories ranging in time from the 1850s to the distant future.

This picture does seem to have caused a little flurry in the Indian press but I believe that, considering how pacey the film will have to be to do justice to the book, this may end up being as much of the saree that we see!

Click on the picture to see the ‘Cloud Atlas’ trailer. I warn you, if you blink at the wrong time, you’ll miss the saree!

Women in Sarees: The Lady on the Staircase

I love the retro forties glamour in the way that this picture is posed and processed. The lady on the staircase is Scarlet Roman, a Mexican student currently studying in China. There she met her Sri Lankan boyfriend and this picture, and the two below the fold (click on the pictures to go to their respective Flickr pages), were taken on a trip to Sri Lanka with him. While there she admits to becoming a real sari fan, as these pictures demonstrate. So hopefully we may see some more of her saree pictures in Women in Sarees.

My thanks to Scarlet for letting me post her pictures here.

Women in Sarees: A Blue Lady at a White Wedding

ShelbyA1 Back in January Sunny mentioned a trend, in Indian films, towards showing inappropriately saree clad heroines in snowy mountain scenery. Well this isn’t a Bollywood movie, this is Shelby Collins attending a Hindu wedding in Braintree in Essex, about thirty miles East of London. Unfortunately the wedding took place in December 2010 when the area was suffering from some particularly severe weather. It does make for a very winsome picture but I do feel for her in those blizzard conditions. There’s a longer shot below the fold. (Click on the pictures to go to their respective Flickr pages.)

So why was an American attending an Indian wedding in Britain. I had to ask, and, as I suspected, there’s an interesting story here. Shelby explained that, ‘The wedding I went to was between an Indian woman who immigrated to America and a white American man. I had met the couple in America and became part of the groom’s wedding party. The bride very much values her culture and heritage and the groom respects and loves that about her. The wedding took place at the bride’s hometown in the traditional Indian style.’

My thanks to Shelby for letting me post her pictures here.

Formula One Saree

picture from INDIAN GRAND PRIX Twitter feed

I can’t pretend that this is a new picture but it is, at least, new to me. It shows Formula One pit lane reporter Natalie Pinkham in a saree during the 2012 Indian Grand Prix. A simple saree but I think the colour suits her particularly well. I hope the hemline didn’t get too grubby after an afternoon strolling through the pits and garages.

Women in Sarees: The Home of Guiding Hands firangi friday saree

When Irene Stone first posted this picture and the three others below the line (Click on the pictures to go to their respective Flickr pages.) on Women in Sarees, I assumed they were taken at a Hindu wedding, I get quite a few of those. However, after a while I began to think that this may not be the case in fact I became so puzzled decided I had to ask her what was going on.

Irene is on the board of governors of the Home of Guiding Hands, a charity based in San Diego, California. Every year they have a fund raising gala and every year the gala has a theme. This year’s theme was Bollywood. It’s interesting to see how the popularity of Bollywood is continuing to grow outside the Indian community and helping to spread a knowledge and appreciation of Indian (and in this case, saree) culture. Some expertly draped sarees on show here, although Irene admits that they did have some assistance in getting it right.

My thanks to Irene for letting me post her pictures here.

At the end of August Prince Rahim Aga Khan, eldest son of His Highness Aga Khan IV, married US model Kendra Sears, hereafter to be known as Princess Salwa, in a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland. The brides stunning ivory saree was designed by Indian designer Manav Gangwani who also designed the grooms matching outfit.
